As a teenager and into my twenties I struggled with my health. I would go out to run errands, but get so tired after one that I would have to come back home to lay down.
That was not normal. I should have been an energizer bunny at that age.
I also got frequent stomach aches when I went out to eat. I remember going out with my best friend and her partner for dinner and coming back to their house, I had to lay down on the couch because my stomach ached so bad.
Stomach aches and being tired were a common occurrence for me. It was so frustrating.
In my 20’s I became obsessed with health. I read every book I could find that would offer some insight into fixing me.
The first book I read was called “Healing Psoriasis, the Natural Alternative” by Dr. John Pagano. (I’ve had psoriasis since I was a teenager and it embarrassed me).
This book was a turning point for me, because I learned there was a link between what I ate and my health. The before and after pictures convinced me that it could work, so I tried it.
The book opened my world. I started seeking more books about food and health and became obsessed over getting better naturally through food.
And It worked. I felt better immediately. I had more energy and I didn’t get stomach aches when I followed my new diet.
And then I learned about the benefits of fermented foods thanks to Donna Gates and her book, the Body Ecology Diet.
When I started making fermented foods and eating them regularly, I felt even better. My skin started to clear up and my moods increased.
That taught me how important the gut is to our health.
Health benefits of fermented foods
Fermented foods are so important to your gut health.
- They help digest our food. The bacteria in fermented foods break down the food we eat, so our bodies can absorb the nutrients in our food. Better digestion helps you poop better, reduces constipation and diarrhea.
- Increases immune function. Up to 80% of our immune system is found in the gut. Eating fermented foods adds good bacteria to our guts to help maintain the balance we need for a healthy immune system.
- Eating fermented foods can increase your energy, because the bacteria in your gut are allowing more vitamins and minerals to be absorbed and used by your body.
- Can reduce brain fog, anxiety, moodiness and depression. I use to suffer from terrible brain fog before I changed my diet and started eating fermented foods.
After years of eating fermented foods I can eat foods I couldn’t eat before. I couldn’t eat beans without getting horrible gas. Now I can eat beans with no problems at all. I can eat bread and even eat out at restaurants occasionally without having issues, because I’ve restored my gut health.
Fermented Foods are so amazing for your body and can be key to having more energy, better digestion, a stronger immune system and many other benefits. Gut health is so important!
